Chiral Luttinger liquid and the edge excitations in the fractional quantum Hall states.

چکیده
The low energy effective theory of the edge excitations in the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) states is proposed. The edge excitations are shown to form a new kind of state which is called the Chiral Luttinger Liquid (χLL). The effective theory is exactly soluble. This enables us to easily calculate all the low energy properties of the edge excitations. We calculate the electron propagator and the spectral function, which clearly demonstrate the non-Fermi liquid behaviors of the χLL. We also calculate the interference effects between excitations on different edges. We demonstrate that the properties of the edge excitations are closely related to the properties of the FQH states on compactified spaces. Thus the properties of the edge excitations can be used to characterize the topological orders in the FQH states. We also show that the FQH states with filling fractions ν 6= l must have at least two branches of edge excitations. PACS numbers: 73.20.Dx, 73.40.Kp, 73.20.Mf * Published in Phys. Rev. Topological Orders and Edge Excitations in FQH States
Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) liquids contain extremely rich internal structures which represent a whole new kind of ordering. We discuss the characterization and classification of the new orders (which is called topological orders). We also discuss the edge excitations in FQH liquids, which form the so-called chiral Luttinger liquids. The chiral Luttinger liquids at the edges also have very ri...
متن کاملThe Quantum Hall Effect Unified Scaling Theory and Quasi - particles at the Edge
We address two fundamental issues in the physics of the quantum Hall effect: a unified description of scaling behavior of conductances in the integral and fractional regimes, and a quasi-particle formulation of the chiral Luttinger Liquids that describe the dynamics of edge excitations in the fractional regime.
متن کاملThe fractional quantum Hall effect : Chern - Simons mapping , duality , Luttinger liquids and the instanton vacuum
We derive, from first principles, the complete Luttinger liquid theory of abelian quantum Hall edge states. This theory includes the effects of disorder and Coulomb interactions as well as the coupling to external electromagnetic fields. We introduce a theory of spatially separated (individually conserved) edge modes, find an enlarged dual symmetry and obtain a complete classification of quasip...
متن کاملMesoscopic Effects in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime: Chiral Luttinger Liquid versus Fermi Liquid.
We study tunneling through an edge state formed around an antidot in the fractional quantum Hall regime using Wen’s chiral Luttinger liquid theory extended to include mesoscopic effects. We identify a new regime where the Aharonov-Bohm oscillation amplitude exhibits a distinctive crossover from Luttinger liquid power-law behavior to Fermi-liquid-like behavior as the temperature is increased. Ne...
متن کاملAharonov-Bohm effect in the chiral Luttinger liquid
Edge states of the quantum Hall fluid provide an almost unparalled opportunity to study mesoscopic effects in a highly correlated electron system. In this paper we develop a bosonization formalism for the finite-size edge state, as described by chiral Luttinger liquid theory, and use it to study the Aharonov-Bohm effect. The problem we address may be realized experimentally by measuring the tun...
